WordPress Automatic Upgrade allows you to automatically upgrade your WordPress installation to the latest one provided by wordpress.org. WordPress versions higher that 2.7.0 will feature an automatic update on your Dashboard. See below:
Alternatively you can go to Tools > Upgrade.
Once you are on the Upgrade WordPress page, you can hit the Update button and proceed with the update process. But before you proceed with the update, I strongly recommend you to backup your WP blog.
NOTE: If you have any plugins installed, you will have to make sure they are compatible with the version you are upgrading to. So it is also advisable that you deactivate the plugins and reactivate them (one by one) once WP is upgraded. This way it should be easy to find out if any plugin is not compatible.
Once you have backed up your blog, click the link ‘Please update now’ or ‘Update’ button.
On the next screen just click on the Upgrade Automatically to start the upgrade process.
Your WordPress should be successfully upgraded. Your screen will look like this,
